What is commonly called as “non-Western” societies have a long history of colonizers thinking of our countries as exotic playgrounds to find themselves. In that context our bodies become not human but something else, an experience; our societies are not everyday societies filled with humans going about their daily lives but an exotic, mysterious set of interactions, much like the child looks at an ant farm; our natural environment not something humans interact with daily but detached from the setting, a lush set of healing that the colonizer can take rest in.
As a result we have suffered imperialistic conquest and colonialism. Our bodies were raped, enslaved, and killed; our societies were destroyed and was pressured to adapt to the “superior” societies of “developed” countries; our natural resources were plundered to make the oppressors rich.
Slum tourism, or “going to other countries to find oneself” is not that different nowadays; even more heinous in light of how diaspora’d people are treated in “Western countries”. They’re not considered exotic enough, and at the same time they are considered the other. There are a whole lot of interactions to think about when one goes to another country.
And yet this ignorant ass white girl’s talking about “omg why can’t I use these places as some sort of a learning center” You can find your fucking self at fucking home you shithead
